Sri Chinmoy
Sri Chinmoy is a spiritual teacher who throughout his lifetime sought to serve others through a variety of innovate and inspirational ways. Spending 20 years in an Indian Ashram, Sri Chinmoy studied and assimilated the ancient Indian scriptures and implemented their ideals through focused spiritual disciplines of meditation, prayer and selfless service. In India and since coming to the West Sri Chinmoy has also widely studied different religious and spiritual traditions embracing the highest ideals of each traditions. To this end Sri Chinmoy has been an eloquent and prominent adherent to the harmony of world religions.
“I fully agree that all religions lead to one truth, the Absolute truth. There is One truth. There is only one Goal, but there are various paths. Each religion is right in its own way.”

Sri Chinmoy sought to spread the ideals of global harmony and oneness in a great variety of ways. Through his extensive writings he encouraged others to live in the heart and transcend the critical judgmental mind. Sri Chinmoy believed that when we live in the heart it easy to feel a oneness and sympathy with others, these qualities of the soul help to bring about an inner peace and outer harmony. To promote the message and ideal of world harmony in a dynamic and joyful way Sri Chinmoy inspired and founded the World Harmony Run, a global relay event in which an Olympic style torch is brought to over 70 countries around the world. Members of the Sri Chinmoy Centre also provide other community services such as free meditation classes. The Sri Chinmoy Centre is a global community with centres in over 60 different countries in 5 different continents. They provide an opportunity for students of Sri Chinmoy to practise spirituality whilst living in the world and contributing to societry. Sri Chinmoy centres offer weekly meditations, evenings of spiritual music and other social activities.
Sri Chinmoy offers a distinctive approach to spirituality; his yoga combines both the inner spiritual life of meditation, devotional singing, prayer and outer selfless service. Through service to others Sri Chinmoy teaches that we can bring the inner peace and the joy of our meditation into the outer world. In his own life Sri Chinmoy demonstrated this through a unique array of activities. For example, he effectively demonstrated the power of inner and outer self-transcendence through his powerful and spectacular weightlifting accomplishments. Sri Chinmoy says he does not weightlift out of competitive spirit but instead he seeks to inspire others.Through activities such as this he has been able to show spirituality can be brought into any aspect of life.
In addition to a ground breaking career in weightlifting Sri Chinmoy also brought his spirituality into more conventional areas. From an early age Sri Chinmoy wrote poetry covering a range of spiritual experiences and emotions. These have ranged from lofty utterances on immortality to short mantra-like aphorisms which create a powerful source of spiritual guidance. Using an inner source of creativity and spontaneity Sri Chinmoy produced a prolific range of unique art drawings, he calls "Jharna Kala" or "Fountain Art". These art drawings and Soul Bird drawings have been displayed at many prestigious art galleries across the World.
Sri Chinmoy had a profound musical spirit, and composed over 17,000 devotional songs. He credited his musical inspiration as coming from deep within. He does not compose music with the mind but exercises the capacity of the heart. Sri Chinmoy has also offered over 500 concerts of meditative music around the world. All concerts he performed free of charge as in the Indian tradition he wished to make spirituality available to all. Sri Chinmoy passed away in October 2007, at the age of 76.
